Fire Safety Information

UPON ARRIVAL
Upon arrival to your rental property, you should familiarize yourself with the layout of the home so that you can plan to evacuate safely in an emergency. Your ability to get out safely depends on your advance planning. Take a few minutes to become familiar with the home and its surroundings, including the route from the bedrooms to the exits.

When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.

Everyone in the home must understand how to escape. Please be sure to instruct any children how to evacuate safely. Decide who will be responsible to assist children or those who may have limited mobility.

FIRE
If you notice a fire, please evacuate immediately. Then call 911 to report the fire. Do not attempt to put out a fire unless the fire is small, you have the knowledge and skill, and you have the proper equipment. If your initial attempts fail to extinguish the fire, evacuate immediately.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES
In the event that you must evacuate the building for fire or other emergency, remember: stay calm.

Evacuate immediately if you hear a smoke detector alarm.

A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Before leaving a room with a closed door, check the door with your hand.

•  If the door is hot, do not open the door. Place a wet towel at the base of the door to prevent smoke from entering the room. Call 911 to report your location in the home.

•   If the door is not hot, slowly open the door while staying low.

As you progress toward the exit, stay low by crouching or crawling on the floor.

Once you’re out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.
